FoR Dad

It can be a challenge to find a gift that fully embodies the love many people feel for their parents. A Frame of Reference gives the opportunity to express such affection in a form that can be treasured endlessly, much like the connection itself.

Commissioned by a young woman looking to mark her father’s birthday, this Frame draws upon the highly creative world of imagining and make-believe that they shared when she was younger.

As her father is a keen gardener and keeper of vegetables, this piece took the format of his beloved vegetable patch, paralleling with the growth, maintenance and love that went into their dynamic over the years.

The vegetables, tools and animals running through the patch are constructed using origami techniques from the various childhood stories that they read to one another and played out through the years. The earthy bed itself comprises a patchwork of maps, detailing the places they have lived and travelled, often inspiring their imaginings together. The patch is then subtly inked with personal references and memories.

“The finished piece is stunning, so completely original, detailed and beautiful. Every piece of it is a symbol of something treasured. I could never have encapsulated a relationship so fully in any other way - and I could certainly never create something like that myself!” – Francesca Wilding, London
